For people who travel alone

The safety check-in app for solo travelers

Traveling alone is freeing. It also means nobody is expecting you anywhere. TapOkay is a simple way to let someone know you're safe while traveling: one tap a day, and if you miss it, the people you chose are alerted with your last location.

The problem with "I'll message when I land"

Most solo travelers have an informal system: a text to a sibling at the airport, a photo in the family chat, a promise to call on Sunday. It works until the day it doesn't. Messages get forgotten when you are having a good time, and a quiet phone can mean anything from a dead battery to a real problem. Your family can't tell which, so they either worry too much or not at all.

A daily check-in gives that habit a structure. You tap once at a set time. Your people do not get a stream of updates, just the reassurance that you checked in. If the check-in doesn't come, they find out within the same day, not a week later when you miss a flight home.

How it works on the road

Set it up before you leave. It takes about two minutes.

Pick your time

Choose a daily check-in time you will reliably be awake for, like breakfast. Adjust it if you cross time zones.

Tap I'M SAFE

One button, once a day. Your circle sees you checked in. Location is recorded at check-in time, not tracked all day.

Miss it, and it escalates

A reminder, then an alarm on your phone, then an alert to your family with your last location.

Works with data

Anywhere your phone is online, on Wi-Fi or mobile data. Sort out a local SIM or eSIM before you go.

If you miss a check-in

At the time you choose, TapOkay reminds you to check in. If you don't, it sounds an alarm on your phone so a missed reminder doesn't become a missed check-in. If there's still no tap, the family members you picked get an alert, with the last location attached.

That last location is often the most useful thing your family can have: the city, the hostel, the trailhead where you were last online. Missed check-in alerts with location are part of the free plan.

TapOkay alerts the people you choose. It is not a medical or emergency service.

Vacation Mode, SOS and what's free

The name can be confusing for travelers. Vacation Mode pauses check-ins. It is meant for times when you don't need anyone watching for a missed tap, like staying with family. If you are a solo traveler who wants someone to notice when something goes wrong, keep your check-ins on and leave Vacation Mode off.

The SOS button, which alerts your circle with your location, comes with Pro. So does the encrypted Safety Vault, a good place for medical notes and emergency contacts. The free plan covers the daily check-in, reminders, the alarm, family alerts with location and up to 2 people in your circle.

A short safety routine for solo travelers

  • Before you leave, invite one or two people who will actually act on an alert, and tell them your rough itinerary.
  • Agree on what they should do if an alert arrives: call you, then your accommodation, then local help.
  • Save the local emergency number for each country you visit in your phone.
  • Set a check-in time that fits your travel day, and check it after every big time-zone change.
  • Keep your phone charged and connected. A small power bank and a local SIM or eSIM go a long way.
  • Keep Vacation Mode off while you are on your own, so a missed check-in is noticed.

The same habits help at home too. If you live alone, our living alone safety checklist covers the basics, and TapOkay for people living alone explains how the daily check-in fits everyday life.

What TapOkay won't do

Being honest matters more than a long feature list. TapOkay needs a data connection to send check-ins and alerts. It does not track you continuously or show anyone a live map. It does not contact police, ambulances or embassies. It is a simple way for the people who care about you to know you are okay, and to find out the same day when you might not be. Solo traveler questions

How does a safety check-in app for solo travelers work?

You pick a daily check-in time and tap I'M SAFE when it comes around. If you miss it, TapOkay reminds you, then sounds an alarm on your phone, then alerts the family members or friends you chose, with your last location attached.

Does TapOkay work abroad?

It works anywhere your phone has a data connection, on Wi-Fi or mobile data. Check-ins and alerts need that connection to go through, so plan for a local SIM, an eSIM or reliable Wi-Fi.

What about time zones?

Set your check-in time for a moment you will reliably be awake and online. When you cross time zones, open the app and make sure the time still makes sense where you are, so you are not asleep when the reminder comes.

Should I turn on Vacation Mode while I travel?

Only if you want check-ins paused. Vacation Mode stops check-ins, which is useful when you are staying with family. If you are traveling alone and want someone to notice a missed check-in, leave Vacation Mode off.

Is there an SOS button?

Yes, with TapOkay Pro. The SOS button alerts your circle with your location. The daily check-in and missed check-in alerts are free.

Will TapOkay contact local emergency services?

No. TapOkay alerts the people you choose. Save the local emergency number for each country you visit, and make sure your contacts know what to do if they get an alert.
