Pet Emergency Card

If you live alone with a pet, your pet depends on you getting home. A fall, a hospital stay or a delayed trip can leave a dog or cat without food, water or medication, and nobody may know they are there. This free tool makes two simple printouts that fix that: a door card that tells a carer everything they need, and a wallet card that tells anyone helping you that a pet is waiting at home.

Who it is for

It is for anyone who lives alone with pets, older pet owners and their families, and people who travel or work long shifts. It is also a good way to start a conversation with a friend or neighbor about being your emergency pet carer.

How to use it

  1. Add each pet with their feeding routine and any medications. You can add up to four.
  2. Add your vet, an emergency pet carer and a backup carer, and say where food and supplies are kept.
  3. Press "Create my pet card", then print the door card and the wallet card.
  4. Tape the door card inside your front door or on the fridge, and keep the wallet card with your ID.

Nothing you type leaves this device. Give your carer a copy of the door card and make sure they know where the spare key is. For a complete plan, read the emergency plan for pet owners who live alone, and see how TapOkay helps pet owners: if you miss your daily check-in, the people you chose are alerted, so someone can check on you and your pets.

Check the card every few months. Pets change food, start new medications and sometimes move vets, and your carer needs the current routine. A short list of the pet's habits and fears can help too.
