Medical Alert or Check-In App? Picker

When someone you love lives alone, the first search is often “medical alert system”. But a monitored pendant is not the only option, and it is not always the right one. A daily check-in app costs far less and answers a different question. This free picker asks six quick questions and suggests a medical alert system, a daily check-in app, or both together, with the reasons behind it.

What is the difference?

A medical alert system is a wearable button, often with optional fall detection, connected to a staffed monitoring center. Press it and a trained operator answers, day or night, and can send help within minutes. Typical plans cost from the $20s to $50+ a month, sometimes with device or activation fees.

A daily check-in app such as TapOkay works on a phone. The person taps I’M SAFE once a day at a time they choose. If they miss it, they get a reminder, then an alarm on their phone, and then the family members they picked get an alert with the last location. The free plan costs $0; Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. It does not call emergency services, has no monitoring staff and cannot detect falls.

How the picker decides

It weighs six things, one question at a time:

  1. Who the help is for.
  2. Falls in the past year, or feeling unsteady.
  3. Health conditions that could need help within minutes, such as a heart condition, seizures or severe diabetes.
  4. How comfortable they are with a smartphone, and whether it stays charged and nearby.
  5. Whether you want 24/7 staff who can send help.
  6. The monthly budget.

The rules are cautious on purpose. A recent fall, a serious condition or a wish for staffed monitoring always puts a medical alert system in the recommendation, sometimes with a check-in app alongside it. A check-in app on its own is only suggested when nothing points to needing help in minutes. The result is general guidance, not medical advice; if you are unsure, ask a doctor who knows the person.
